Katherine Johnson (1918-present) is an African-American mathematician whose calculations of orbital mechanics were critical to the success of the first and subsequent manned spaceflights. She worked for NASA and its predecessor NACA, and her calculations were instrumental to the beginning of the Space Shuttle Program. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.
